This guide explains what balayage actually is, how it differs from highlights and ombé, what it costs at Mimosa Beauty Lounge in Barsha Heights, how long it lasts in Dubai’s climate, and the aftercare that decides whether it still looks good in month four.

What is balayage?

Balayage is a freehand technique — the colourist paints lightener onto the surface of the hair rather than saturating it in foils. Because there is no hard start line at the root, it grows out softly instead of leaving a visible band, which is why it needs far fewer salon visits than traditional highlights. Balayage vs highlights vs ombé

These three get used interchangeably, and they are not the same thing. Balayage in Dubai suits people who want low maintenance; highlights suit people who want maximum lift and even brightness; ombé is a stronger root-to-tip gradient.

How much does balayage cost in Dubai?

At Mimosa, balayage is priced by length and includes toner and bonding — two things that are often charged as extras elsewhere, which is where surprise bills come from. All prices are VAT inclusive.

How long does balayage last?

The colour placement itself lasts four to six months before it needs redoing. The tone is what fades first — usually within eight to twelve weeks — which is why a stand-alone toner appointment (from AED 185) is the cheapest way to keep balayage looking fresh between full services.

Balayage aftercare in Dubai

Dubai water is the main culprit

Tap water in the UAE is largely desalinated and mineral-heavy. Those minerals deposit on lightened hair and are the single biggest cause of balayage turning brassy or dull. A shower filter helps more than most people expect.

Sun and chlorine

Pool water plus UV will pull warmth out of any lightened hair within weeks. Rinse before and after swimming, and use a leave-in with UV protection through summer.

Keep the bond work going

Skip the hot tools, or at least turn them down

Balayage sits on the mid-lengths and ends — exactly where a straightener does the most damage. Under 180°C, always with heat protection.

Is balayage right for your hair?

Balayage works best on hair that already has some natural movement or existing depth to blend into. If your hair is very dark and you want a big lift, expect two sessions rather than one — anyone promising black to bright blonde in a single appointment is not protecting your hair. Balayage is gentler than full-head bleaching because it does not touch the root and covers less surface area, and bonding treatments during the service reduce the damage considerably. Skipping aftercare is what causes the damage people complain about.

How long does a balayage appointment take?

Around 90 minutes for short hair and about 120 minutes for long hair, including toner. Book earlier in the day if you also want a cut or blow-dry.
